The ASTDA Distinguished Career Award recognizes individuals whose sustained leadership, scholarship, and service have made a lasting impact on the field of sexually transmitted diseases. This award honors a lifetime of exceptional contributions that have advanced science, strengthened practice, and shaped the direction of STD prevention, research, and care.

Carolyn D. Deal, PhD
Carolyn D. Deal, Ph.D. is the Chief of the Enteric and Sexually Transmitted Infections Branch, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, USA. She is a graduate of Purdue University and received her degree in Microbiology from the University of Illinois. She started in the government as a Research Scientist at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and subsequently served as the Deputy Director for the Division of Bacterial Products, Office of Vaccines Research and Review, Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, FDA. She works in a variety of areas to advance the development of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics for the improvement of human health.
